Thomas Ferreira - Blue Light Brigade Victim
On 5 November 2011, Thomas Ferreira - an 18 year-old matric student was crashed into by a BMW X5 that went through a red traffic light without exercising "due regard to the safety of other traffic" as is required by the National Road Traffic Act.
The net result has been that Thomas has sustained brain damage and is currently in a rehabilitation centre where he remains on a feeding tube inserted into his stomach. Shortly after the crash, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane committed to ensure that Thomas receives the best medical care, but as yet - no contributions towards his medical expenses have been forthcoming. The matter has now been referred to the offices of Mr Humphrey Mmemezi, the MEC whose car it was that crashed into Thomas and denials are coming forward with respect to the commitments made by both the Premier and the MEC.
Not only do his parents have to deal with the fact that their son is in a serious medical condition, but also the prospect of not being in a position to meet the mounting medical bill shortfalls.
As a result, a trust fund has now been formed to enable members of the public to assist the Ferreiras in their plight.
